Band

Fel Mpanta

Philharmonic or “bands” are the musical ensembles that usually operate under the authority of the local government or military corps . There are also Philharmonic Societies which were the first to be formed back in the 19th century, and one of them is the Lefkada Philharmonic Society.

Instruments

They consist mainly of:

  • brass (trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, horn)
  • woodwinds (clarinet, saxophone, flute, oboe, bassoon)
  • percussion (drum, grankasa, dishes, glockenspiel, etc.) The percussion hangs with strips from the neck so that the ensemble can walk and play at the same time.

Rarely is the double bass used in the role of the tuba.

Historical data

The bands originate from the military fanfara of the Middle Ages which originally had trumpets, tambourines and fine flutes. In the Baroque era it was enriched with brass instruments with keys and wood, while in the 19th century the grankasa and the dishes from the Turkish Janissary philharmonic orchestras were added. Last addition was the saxophone.

They first appeared in Greece in the middle of the 19th century and greatly influenced Greek music. Their contributed mainly on traditional music, by enriching it with new instruments such as the clarinet and the brass.

Repertoire

Their repertoire is usually raids which play on national and religious holidays. Some philharmonic orchestras (eg Lefkada, Corfu) also play operas, opera introductions, operettas, concerts as well as transcriptions of popular songs, Greek and foreign repertoire. Some philharmonic orchestras (Lefkada f.i.) try to expand both their repertoire and their role in the local community.

Education

The Band of the Lefkada Philharmonic Society consists of approximately 50-60 performers who are led by the Chief Musician for the best performance and interpretation of the musical works – pieces. The role of the Band is very important for the local music education.

In the Philharmonic a child may start from 8-9 years old and in a short time will be learning basic music reading (Theory) and how to play a musical instrument of its preference, taught by a specialised teacher, until a certain level of achievement is reached, and then the child will be able to participate in the ensembles of the Philharmonic.

Many of the children then continue their thorough musical studies, while others remain for life as standard musicians of the Philharmonic.
